Work has been steadily progressing with a new bogie truck. The design is similar to Bogie Truck No 3.
The body, chassis and bogies have been placed on the track to check everything looks ok.
The bogie wheel sets were obtained from The Engineers Emporium together with sealed bearings. The 'axle boxes' were made from a peice of hard wood, blind holes were bored into the wood to take the bearings.
The hardwood forms the eaquilising bar.
A nearly completed bogie.
This uses the hard springs, of which I have a large stock. However at a recent Model Engineering show I bought some softer springs. I thought I would give these a try on this wagon, so replaced the springs shown in this picture with the new ones.
Unfortunately, the new springs meant that, with the setup as shown, the springs compressed sufficiently to bring the main frame in contact with the equiliser bar.
So this is the modified version of my bogie. The steel box section equiliser bar has been replaced by a length of aluminium angle bolted over the top of the hard wood 'axle box' member. this gives enough clearance for the springs to compress under load.
Bogie truck No4 makes up a train with truck No3 hauled by Loco No 3 at the end of metal on the new siding.
The almost completed Bogie Truck No 4 during a test run.
The revised bogie with the softer springs, although handles the track ok, seemed very unstable. So I have reverted back to the harder springs.
